Antioxidants

You've probably heard a lot of moolah lately about antioxidant benefits. If you open up any health related magazines or watch the news sooner or later someone will be telling you that they only way to maintain optimum health is with a heathy dose of antioxidants. So it seems a given that all the "experts" rate them, but you may not know how they work and how to add them into your diet. Antioxidants are linked to free radicals. Free radicals are the nasty little molecules that have an oxidizing effect on your body. This means they cause your healthy cells to divide a lot sooner and basically die off. Free radicals therefore damage the healthy cells and are linked to certain diseases such as cancer, heart disease and even cataracts. Another way to think of oxidation caused by free radicals is to visualize how rust damages metal.

Basically it is impossible to avoid all contact with free radicals. They are produced simply by the normal chemical processes in the body. You can get them by normal activities like aerobic exercises, exposure to the sun, stress, smoking, drinking alcohol, pollution, environmental factors and many other sources. In some ways, the free radicals can actually be helpful because they don't just damage healthy cells, they damage harmful germs as well. Having free radicals in the body is such a normal thing, but it can be harmful when the level of free radicals gets out of control. If you have too many free radicals in your body, it can cause cell damage which is what you want to avoid.

Antioxidants bind together with the free radical molecules, and they neutralize the damaging effects they have on your healthy cells. As well as rendering the free radicals harmless, antioxidants can even aid in the repairing of cells that have already been damaged. Antioxidants are really useful for two puroposes you could then say. They limit the harmful effects of free radicals and they help fix any sustained damage. Everyone needs a little antioxidant help in their diets, but as you can imagine with todays diets and busy lifestyles, unfortunately not everyone gets enough on a regular basis. The body can produce certain antioxidants freely and you can help it by consuming antioxidant rich foods and beverages. You may also want to consider taking a supplement if you do not take in enough of these foods and beverages.

Antioxidant benefits can also be aquired by consuming lots of natural produce. Broccoli, red peppers, carrots, kale, oranges and berries are just a few of the fruits and vegetables that are rich in antioxidants. Other sources of them include coffee and tea. White tea is the least processed type of tea on the market. This means it has the most antioxidants, with green tea coming in a close second. You can even get antioxidants from dark chocolate and red wine believe it or not, but you need to consume these in strict moderation. Now that you know the benefits of antioxidants, you may want to make alterations to your diet to make sure you are getting enough of them.
